Knight – Round 27: ‘Separate Ways’

Travis and Marla Knight are trying to help out their eldest daughter and single mother, Kit.  Dominic and Nadia don’t know their father and they’re getting more curious about him everyday… can Kit keep them from finding out?

It was an unfortunate incident.  Travis was older than Marla and his health had been in decline lately.  It was no surprise when he dropped over while watching the twins.  Luckily, Dominic and Nadia were smart enough to call 911 and their missing elders.  Kit and Marla rushed home only to be told he was dead when they arrived.

Kit was distraught but Marla, surprisingly, showed very little remorse.  Instead, her first thought was that they were taking a vacation.

They stayed at a cabin deep in the mountains.  It was Marla’s way of giving the kids time to mourn and deal with what they’ve seen.  Kit, also, seemed to need some time.  She’d never been close to her father, but it’s never easy to lose a parent.

The mountains were a great place to go and just unwind to get away from it all.

Of course, it’s also fun to try and see who can stay on the log longest.  After the kids gave up trying to beat the adults, the adults went toe-to-toe.  Kit was surprised by her elder mother’s agility and found herself face first in a pit of water more than once.

Nadia and Dominic were disappointed when they were told they couldn’t throw axes.  Instead, they were forced to watch as their mother and grandmother showed immense skill with hitting the target.  It was pretty clear to everyone at the lumber yard that day–don’t mess with a Knight woman, she knows where to aim and she’ll definitely hit the spot!

They spent nights around the camp fire outside of their cabin, roasting marshmallows and telling ghost stories.  The twins didn’t talk too much about their grandfather’s death.  He’d always been very active in their lives, but the mystery of their father and all the weirdness they’d dealt with as small kids kind of made them of a stronger skin.  Instead, they enjoyed the holiday with their mother and grandmother.

“Our birthday is coming up,” Dominic said, cornering Marla one morning.  “Is mom going to finally tell us about dad?”

Marla sighed, “I don’t know sweetie.  Your mom is only worried about you two, that’s all.  She’s not withholding just to be cruel.”

“We should know, everyone should know who their father is.”

“Sometimes, yes… but in this case?  I can’t help but wonder.”

When they weren’t trying to get information out of her, they were enjoying a round of early-morning fishing.  Kit wasn’t nearly as eager, deciding to instead read a book and try not to fall asleep.  Marla, herself, was quite the experienced fisherman so she gave the twins plenty of tips.  One has to be able to make their own catch to be a culinary marvel!

While the twins enjoyed the mountains, they didn’t quite understand the culture.  A round of Slap Dancing later and they were both terribly confused.

“Dom, this is silly,” Nadia exclaimed, feeling awkward amidst the crowd of slap-happy locals and their own mother.

“I know, I don’t even know how you’re supposed to do that leg thing.”

“Let’s go poke that hole over there.  Maybe a snake will come out!”

“Mom, why aren’t you more upset about dad’s death?”

Marla sighed, closing her eyes, “it’s complicated, but I’m sure you know that.  I guess I’m just glad it’s over, you know?  We’ve really only stayed together these past years because we were too old to start over.”

“Dad wasn’t very faithful.”

“Not in the least, sweetie.  I’ve spent years blaming Katarina, but I guess it wasn’t just her, it was him, too.  It feels like a weight gone, I don’t have to worry about it anymore.  I feel free.”

“Do you think our family is doomed when it comes to love?  Nothing ever seems to work out.”

“I think that we make our own luck, Kit.  You can make the best of something, if you really try, or you can cling to something you know isn’t going to work out.  In the end, your luck is driven by the decisions you make, for better or worse.”

“Sometimes, I feel like a fool.  A really big joke,” Kit frowned, staring forward.  “I’m probably going to be alone forever, just because I was so stupid when I had chances.”

“You don’t know that, maybe you’ll meet someone here.”

“I don’t want to,” Kit languished.  “I feel old and I know I’m almost there, teetering on the edge.  I have two kids who I can’t even tell about their father, for fear he’ll find out or worse his father will find out.  I’m too complicated to start anything… and even that wasn’t true, I wouldn’t want to.”

“You’ll be okay, sweetie.  You’re strong, you’ve made it this far.”

“I guess so, but I still feel really stupid.  The feelings are still there and I don’t think they’ll ever go away.  It sucks, to know someone has that kind of control over you without really knowing it or even caring.”

“Just focus on what you need to do now.  You will have to tell them, sooner or later… or they’ll find out on their own.”

Kit leaned back against the wall, closing her eyes, “I know, I know, I just… I’m not ready to open that can of worms yet.”

The get away was a success and both the twins were exhausted.  Marla tucked them in, checking their suitcases before she left the room to ensure that everything was packed.  This was the last time she’d do this as when they returned home, they’d have their birthday and be too big for grandma to tuck them in anymore.

Had it really been so long ago that they’d been born and Kit had come to their door looking a mess?

Nadia and Dominic did, indeed, have their birthday.  At this point, it was almost impossible to deny their lineage, written plain as day in their eyes, on their faces.  They seemed to have nothing of Kit in them, just a painful reminder of the past.

Note from Mao: Travis kicked the bucket the first day of play, LOL!  Good thing I checked his age bar and had the present state of mind to call the nanny.  Kit and Marla don’t get home until late at night.  Marla couldn’t have cared less, he had cheated on her at Shelly’s party, so she was furious with him.  Go figure!

Sometimes, I feel really bad for Kit.  After hanging out with her mother in the sauna, she rolled up a “WooHoo in Sauna” want.  Sorry, Kit, no dice.

The twins turned out amazing.  It’s kind of ridiculous to think their father doesn’t show blatantly… Dominic has his face and Nadia the skintone and eyes.  Geeze.  Also, I didn’t get a picture of it, but when they were still kids… Dominic brought Selene home from school, LOL!  Awwwkward.

  1. Wow, I can’t believe Kit thinks Gordon doesn’t know. She has no clue how powerful he really is. I’m glad Marla was honest about her relationship to Kit, life isn’t always roses and sugar.

  2. Kit really doesn’t fully know what Gordon is capable of. Shame, too. She probably should have just told them. ;)

  3. I am a little bit confused about family trees, but are Nadia and Dominic Saunders/Anderson bloodline somehow? I keep looking at them and thinking of how much they favor Janine and Ryu! I feel like they all must be related somehow, but I can’t keep all the family relationships exactly straight. (Though I haven’t the faintest idea why! ;) )

Regardless, great entry. RIP Travis, and I’m crossing my fingers that Kit finds some happiness in the world before elderhood or even in her golden years. She seems like she’s had such a rough time of it, and I’d love to see her blissfully happy someday.

  4. I’m not surprised that they’re not particularly sad about him dying. I wouldn’t be either. I’m glad they had a nice vacation though. I think I’m gonna like these kids.

  5. I have no clue what the history is here, but I’m going digging tonight! I am completely curious about their story line, their father, and so forth.

“I think that we make our own luck, Kit. You can make the best of something, if you really try, or you can cling to something you know isn’t going to work out. In the end, your luck is driven by the decisions you make, for better or worse.”

I really liked the wisdom in this. I hope things turn out better for Kit. Sad that Marla didn’t have a happier marriage in her life. Seems sad to just stay cause you’re getting older. The picture of Marla tucking the twins in is quite precious. Marla and Kit are quite the ace’s in the physical department, no? With the log and the ax throwing.

  6. Aw, RIP Travis! That was a surprise!

“Let’s go poke that hole over there. Maybe a snake will come out!”
Kids! As someone who works with children, I can say that definitely rang true.

Kit sounds a bit like my Abigail used to be, although she eventually sorted herself out. She went on vacation by herself and she was still all “hey, I want to woohoo in the hammock and then the tent, and then the sauna!” LOL, she was driving me nuts for a good while! Kit seems to know she’s in a mess (probably not just how big a mess though) but just isn’t sure what to do about it. Marla is right though – the truth will come out eventually, especially with Gordon on the case!

  7. Hahaha! Kids are such curious things. ;)

Kit is such a lost cause. I think she’s pretty much thrown in the towel at this point and just plans on taking whatever comes her way. Gordon has no malice for Kit, he actually feels pity for her, so she doesn’t have to fear him. He is very family oriented, however, and will want to see and know his grandchildren.

    Comment by Mao — December 16, 2009 @ 9:19 pm

  8. Haha, thanks. Marla has learned a lot in her years, but a lot of people fall into that rut where they just stay together because it’s familiar and easy. It’s unfortunately very common…

    Comment by Mao — December 16, 2009 @ 9:20 pm

  9. LOL, me too. They are a lot of fun so far.

    Comment by Mao — December 16, 2009 @ 9:21 pm

  10. If you ever want to explore your curiosities, I do have a fully functioning and interactive family tree over here. An easy rule of thumb is ANY descendant of Gordon’s is of the Anderson/Saunders branch. Gordon’s skintone is Janine’s and Janine was an original Anderson. :) They have no relation to Ryu at all. You can see Nadia’s ancestors here.

You’re probably thinking of Alyssa and Ryu; Alyssa was 100% Anderson, the last child of Janine and Thomas.

  11. Nadia’s such a beauty! Definately favours her father though, RIP Travis? good for riddance causing Marla that grief! I think even if Kit doesn’t seek Gordon out Gordon will eventually seek her out because he wants what’s his! (Well his grandchildren that is)

    Comment by Mohohon — December 16, 2009 @ 10:48 pm

  12. LOL! You’re right, Gordon will get to know the twins whether Kit likes it or not. Personally, I think it will be good for them because Gordon has a tendency to “take care of his own”.

    Comment by Mao — December 17, 2009 @ 11:17 am

  13. Aww, it makes me sad that Travis kept cheating on her, even as an elder. He’s fresh. :(

The twins are so good looking, wow! I was shocked! And I’m sure Kit will find someone else…hopefully. :D

    Comment by Josh — December 17, 2009 @ 3:06 pm

  14. Holy sh-, Nadia came out really pretty and if it weren’t for the fact that people are adround I would have shoted out “Dominic is Claude expect darker!”

Really it’s amazing at how much they look like Claude and how pretty Nadia came out. The hair looks fantastic on her.

    Comment by Victoria — December 17, 2009 @ 3:47 pm

  15. Psh, you shouldn’t be shocked! ;) Kit looks pretty good and Claude, well, he’s got a lot of Gordon. His kids are almost guaranteed to be pretty, LOL!

    Comment by Mao — December 17, 2009 @ 3:58 pm

  16. Hahaha! He is totally a Darker Claude. It’ll be interesting to see how different he is.

    Comment by Mao — December 17, 2009 @ 3:58 pm

  17. Ah, thank you for the family tree!! Now I’ll be digging around in there and playing for a while reminding myself of family connections! And you’re right, I was thinking of Alyssa. I also figured out that I think the similar hairstyles of Ryu and Dominic made me see a resemblance, even through the heavy Claude-ification of both of them. :)

Regardless, I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with these two and how it will go when they find out about their mysterious parentage.

    Comment by Shannon — December 18, 2009 @ 7:01 am

  18. Oh…rest in peace, Travis. Although you cheated on your wife, you were still a pretty good man. Lawl, Marla’s got the strength of a girl half her age. Ugh, makes me wish I had BV more. I want teh asian junk and vacations seem fun. Oh well :3 I’ll live vicariously through your game!

It’s nice to see Kit and her mom talking. Kit really doesn’t have it the best but as long as you have a mom who understands, I guess it makes it easier.

xD lawl, I wonder how much longer the two of them will be in the dark about who Daddy Dearest is.

    Comment by Elecy — December 18, 2009 @ 12:11 pm

  19. Not for long, that I will say. Gordon may be feeling the strain, but he’s intent on seeing those kids, LOL!

Travis was such a hoot. He never spun up wants for anyone else, but he sure did mess around a lot. Boggles the mind, really! Makes you wonder why Marla didn’t use her mad axe skillz on him! ;)

Kit has had a rough road, but she kind of brought it on herself. In the end, it’s always nice to have your family’s support.

    Comment by Mao — December 18, 2009 @ 12:19 pm

  20. Awww, I also feel very bad for Kit, even though it’s all due to choices she made. In any case, 12 or so years worth of secrets must be pretty hard to dig up :( I wonder how things might have turned out if she’d have just been honest with Claude from the beginning?

    Anyway, RIP Travis.

    Comment by laura — December 18, 2009 @ 8:33 pm

  21. Oh, definitely. She’s lying in the bed she made, that’s for certain. It’s hard to say what could have possibly happened… though with Claude, maybe it’s for the best, LOL!

    Comment by Mao — December 18, 2009 @ 8:42 pm

  22. I can’t say I’ll really miss Travis… he was always kind-of on the sidelines after that whole Katrina fiasco. Hopefully Marla will be able to be happy again now that he is gone. I really feel sorry for Kit, for all the stupid things she’s done, at least she recognizes them and has remorse. There really no denying that the twins belong to Claude, Marla’s right… they’ll find out who their dad is whether Kit tells them or not.

    Comment by Liz — December 21, 2009 @ 4:08 pm

  23. Oh, yes. The time is coming. Kit should know that Gordon isn’t one to just let his family drift about unknown. ;)

    Comment by Mao — December 21, 2009 @ 6:22 pm

  24. I do feel bad for Kit, but I also wish she would just come clean already!!!! And boy do the twins look like their father. They have come out very attractive. Future heart breakers. LOL

    Comment by GoldenBuffy — December 29, 2009 @ 4:03 pm

  25. LOL! Kit isn’t going to have a chance. ;)

    Comment by Mao — December 29, 2009 @ 7:53 pm

  26. Nadia and Dominic are very nice looking teens. Dominic really takes after his father. I hope Kit decides to tell them so they can know their siblings.

    Comment by Monique — January 8, 2010 @ 6:23 pm

  27. They really do. It’s hard to deny who their father is. ;)
