Saunders – Round 28: ‘Hold Me Now’

Sage and Daisy Saunders are left to deal with the aftermath of their close friend, Jennifer Knight’s, death. (Sorry for the lack of elder Virginia portrait… I forgot!)

Sage couldn’t help but reflect on her own life in the wake of Jennifer’s death.  It had been so sudden, a complete surprise.  She had barely believed it when she heard the news, but it was true.  Jennifer was gone.  What was Sage doing with her life?  When things could be snapped up at a moment’s notice, why was she waiting around for something to happen?

She carried the thoughts with her as she walked out of her house.  She was meeting Jared for lunch.

Things with Jared were pleasantly casual, they weren’t officially attached, but they enjoyed each others company.  It had been Sage who had prompted this casual clause, intent on finding ‘Mr. Right’ before settling down.  Now, though, she found herself questioning it.  She liked Jared and she found herself spending more time with him than any of her other suitors… she just wasn’t sure if he felt the same.

“I was wondering,” she began nervously, fingers pulling at the fabric of her pants.  “I like you, a lot… and I was just curious, maybe we could be serious?  More than just… you know, casual friends with mutual interest?”

“Is this about your friend’s death?”  Jared replied without missing a beat.

Sage suddenly felt foolish and tried to busy her nervous hands with the menu, “I… well, if you don’t want to–”

“No, that’s not it at all,” Jared said, leaning on the table, watching her intently from behind tinted lenses.  “I just want to make sure this isn’t some move prompted by your realization that death is always there, behind the door, waiting to sneak up and snatch away your life.”

She sighed, “well… kind of.  I mean, not the liking you part, obviously… but I don’t want to flounder, you know?  I don’t want to have regrets.  I want to take chances.”

“I’ve been wondering how long it’d take.  I have to say, as pleased as I am… I’m sorry it had to come in the wake of Jennifer’s death.”

“Everything happens for a reason, right?” Sage said, her eyes looking past him and instead focusing on the endless blue horizon behind him.

Their lunch ended and with it, their actual relationship began.  It would be strange, turning down dates, but Sage was sure she could manage.  She’d never wanted the lifestyle of going out all the time.  She wanted a happy home, a family.  She was hoping that Jared was the right step in that direction.

“I have to tell you, though,” Sage began, her lips forming a Cheshire cat grin, “that outfit is ridiculous.”

“Hey!  This is high fashion, I’ll have you know.  It’s what all the politicians wear.”

She laughed, “I seriously doubt that.  They’d never get elected wearing that jacket!”

Dating Jared wasn’t going to be easy.  He was in politics and there were plenty of high-class ladies surrounding him at every moment.  There was also the issue of Shelly Anderson and the rumors, but having actually known Jared, she knew they were false.  They were just campaign fodder.

Sage wasn’t particularly worried.  If he had wanted to date them, he would of.  Instead, he spent the majority of his time with her or being forced into Shelly’s bidding.

When he wasn’t running errands for the ‘Queen of Evil’, he spent a lot of time at Sage’s house.  It was a good way point and much better than driving back to Aperture everyday.  Shelly was always in need of something and Jared was always on call.  It gave him an excuse to hang around Boreal Springs more often, though, so he wasn’t going to complain.

Getting to know her family was certainly interesting.  Daisy had been the most affected by Jennifer’s death, with so much left hanging in the air when she died.  She still seemed to be in shock, though, as she went on as she normally did.  It worried Virginia and Sage, who thought she at least needed to have a good cry or something.  They may not have been “dating”, but they’d been friends forever.

Instead of turning to her sister, Daisy kept her grief hidden.  She let some of it out when she talked to Emma, but mostly, she listened to Emma complain about her inability to do anything right.  That girl was a certified mess.  She’d slept with her boss and dumped Francis.  She hadn’t been close to Jennifer, but the whole ‘death’ thing had certainly shaken her up.  Daisy did her best to try and keep her friend from flying too far off course, but it was hard, as Emma seemed so intent on failing.

Daisy mourned Jennifer in her own, quiet way.  She still wasn’t sure how to feel or what to think.  It had all been so sudden.  She wasn’t sure what she felt or what she had started to feel before death had snapped Jennifer up.  Could she really have been interested in a girl?  She didn’t know, she wouldn’t ever know, not now.

She spent a lot of time at the park, late at night.  It was always quiet.  She needed quiet.

Sage, tired of her sister avoiding her, decided to go out looking for her.  When she found her quietly sitting at the park, she suddenly felt guilty.  She had thought Daisy was running off to someone else to express her sorrows to.  The two had always been terribly close and that thought had hurt her more than words could express.  However, finding her alone, in the dark, just sitting there… it made her heart ache.

She just looked so lost and confused.

“You can’t keep this bottled up forever, Daisy,” Sage said, taking a seat next to her.  “You have to let it out sometime.”

“I just don’t know what to let out,” Daisy sighed, closing her eyes.  “I don’t know what I felt, if I felt anything… she was my friend, but I don’t know, I mean… it just seems too weird, to think about it now.  Maybe we would have always just been friends.  It just sucks that she died not knowing, that I left her hanging like that.”

Sage settled her back against the wooden planks, hands resting idly on her lap, “she was your friend, Daisy.  Above all else, she was always your friend.  She told you that all the time.  She felt terrible for telling you her secret.”

“It’s just… hard… to think about, you know?  It was so quick.  It’s going to be awhile before I fully realize it–that she’s actually gone.”

“Well, whatever it takes, you don’t have to do it alone, you know that.  I’m here for you, always and forever, sis.”

“Thanks,” Daisy said softly, taking a deep breath.  “And I’m sorry.  I didn’t meant to push you away.”

“It’s all right, I understand.”

They sat in silence, staring at the quiet, dark park before them.  Every now and again, it would catch the faint light of the lighthouse off in the distance, illuminating the swings, the benches, the shallow pond with tiny fish.  They sat there for an hour or so before the cold nipped at their fingers and their nose.  When they stood up, they didn’t say a word, but they joined hands and they walked home.  Jennifer wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

Note from Mao: Another update, woo.  I’m so slow, I know, I apologize.  I’ve been sick and stuff has been a bit on the crazy side, so I’ve mostly been over here relaxing and wasting time with TS3.  Apologies.  I still love my BS, but it takes a bit more energy out of me.  ;)

Jared immediately spun up the wish to get engaged to Sage, so I would definitely say he’s in it to win it, which amuses me.  Shelly won’t be pleased, I’m sure.

BS turns two here in the next week or so.  I’m planning something for that.  Hopefully it’ll make up for the update gaps!

ETA — I forgot to add, but I’m sure you’ve all noticed (but were nice enough not to mention) that this entry should come after Anderson, not before.  The deal is, I realized this AFTER I’d written out the entry.  I have pictures and everything for Anderson update, but in my silly-mindedness… went for Saunders first, sigh.  Anderson update is forthcoming, I promise.  You’ll never know it was backwards… unless you, you know, browse the archives, LOL!  ;)

  1. I like Jared and I’m not surprised that he is in it to win it. I wonder what’s going on with Shelly and Cole.

  2. I can’t believe BS turns two. Time just flies by.

I’m still mourning Jennifer’s death too. She was such a sweet charater and she’ll be sorely missed. I don’t think I’ve been this upset over as BS death since Gina’s.

I’m glad Sage and Jared decided to make their relationship more than friends they seem like a good match. I hope Daisy finds her special someone.

  5. I know, I’m still kind of in shock. This is the longest I’ve managed to keep a hood. Hooray for two years without BFBVFS!

I’m kind of glad it happened, because I love it when the game pulls random things on me like that. That and it helps the population.

  6. Hi there! I can’t believe you trudged through all the old entries, you’re a trooper. :D

  7. I think Jennifer’s death must have been a real blow to anyone who knew her but especially Daisy. She’ll never know if they could have had anything together and that’s got to be tough to deal with. I’m still very sad about Jennifer, by the way!

And Jared’s looking to become a permanent fixture around the Saunders’ house, eh? He’ll have to lose the snakeskin first. Or not, because it’s kind of hilarious to look at! Oh, EAxis…where do you get your ideas?

  8. My heart breaks for these two. Seriously, my eyes welled up while reading it. Jennifer was almost their sister, well, except in the case of her attraction to Daisy. I understand her confusion; she was so muddled in the head before Jennifer died, and this didn’t help. It kinda leaves her hanging in the air, without closure.
And I like Jared. He cracks me up. I hope he and Sage can work it out.

  9. I am really surprised how far the ripples extend with this death! It was definitely a shock. It wasn’t like she was old or known to be sick. Poor Jennifer. I’m enjoying Jared. He was just a bit player at first, but he’s crept his way into the spotlight. His outfit cracks me up! What is up with that handkerchief around his neck?

  10. Awww, Fini! It was sad. It’s weird to think about it from Daisy’s perspective, but you’re right… no closure, no nothing. And that’s never going to change. Poor girl!

  11. Aww, sisters :) Poor Daisy, it must be terrible to have all that sadness and guilt bottled up. I think Sage is starting to grow on me, I was never really sure about her when she was growing up, but she turned out okay.

  12. Haha, I was never sure how these two would end up, either. They’ve come a long way!

  13. It’s times like these I’m glad I can remind myself that they are pixellated and not real because if they were real, I would be all misty-eyed for Daisy and Sage. That Jennifer thing was so weird and so shocking!

Can’t wait to see what Jared wears to the wedding. :p

  14. Sage and Daisy are dealing with the loss so differently, and here Sage has this relationship she wanted, and Daisy is sitting on park benches. I’m glad the two have each other to rely on. I think Daisy might have a longer grieving process, just with how everything ended. Agree with fini, there’s that lack of closure.

  15. I think Jared’s going to become one of my favourites in this, despite his dress-sense and dancing… well, partially BECAUSE he’s so self-consciously hip. It’s hilarious.

  16. Haha, awww! The Jennifer thing really was a bit of a shock. And LOL! I hadn’t thought about that… maybe a powder blue tux? xD

    Comment by Mao — January 22, 2010 @ 6:05 pm

  17. Sage finally gets a man, it’s only taken forever. :D There’s no closure for poor Daisy, I don’t think she’ll take it very well at all.

    Comment by Mao — January 22, 2010 @ 6:05 pm

  18. Haha, it’s so true! I had to find some reasoning for that ridiculous outfit and it just seemed to fit so well. ;)

    Comment by Mao — January 22, 2010 @ 6:06 pm

  19. LOL, that outfit! (In my hood, that character ended up being Leila Watt’s grandfather, and he was always a uniquely “stylish” kind of guy). I’m glad Jared and Sage are moving forward.

Poor, poor Daisy! Especially having to hear Emma go on about it! Shame, Emma!

I don’t know what kind of closure she could find either. Maybe there will be something, some day. I hope she finds some peace.

    Awww, sister love! :)

  20. I’m glad Sage finally stopped dragging her feet and let Jared know how she feels, hopefully Shelly doesn’t get too angry. Wow, my heart just aches for Daisy, I was really looking forward to seeing what would develop between her and Jennifer. I also feel terrible that she doesn’t want to burden her sister with her feelings :( Such a sad entry!

  21. He reminds me of a friend of mine who wore designer glasses even though his eyesight was perfect XD are you going to change his outfit or leave it as it is?

    Comment by Zoë — January 29, 2010 @ 10:40 am

  22. LOL, I don’t know if I’ll change it or not… it’s become his staple. Daisy is kind of stuck in limbo, but at least she has Sage.

  23. Hahaha, it’s about time this house got some romance! :P

    Comment by Mao — January 29, 2010 @ 11:26 am

  24. LOL! That is hilarious. I don’t know, I might… but we’ll see.

    Comment by Mao — January 29, 2010 @ 11:27 am

  25. I really like Sage and Jared together; they look completely different, what with Sage dressed nicely and Jared… wearing that. As for Shelly, lets just say I wish it was her who died randomly instead of Jennifer. Haha, I’m very opinionated.

    Comment by Kyle — January 31, 2010 @ 9:34 pm

  26. Hahaha, I don’t think you’re the only one thinking that. ;)
