Saunders – Round 26: ‘Unfortunate Finality’

Basil and Virginia Saunders haven’t been the best parents.  Will their passage into elder hood make them realize the errors of their ways?

Basil did feel remorse for the way he had acted during his adult life.  He had two beautiful daughters and he’d all but ignored them until it was too late.  Now that he was an elder–and losing his hair–he tried his best to build a shaky bridge between them.  He even smiled and nodded when Sage mentioned that she maybe wanted the house to have a full-scale makeover.  The house had remained the absolute same pretty much since Henry Saunders was in residence and boy… that was a long time ago!

The passing of beloved cat Daenarys was a big wake-up call, too.  Life was finite.  Basil hadn’t been feeling too well lately, either.  Maybe he’d caught a cold or something at work?  He rested as much as he could and swallowed down plenty of cough medicine.

Meanwhile, Virginia was feeling her youth slip away.  In an effort to prove to herself that she was still as foxy as ever, she made the mistake of trying to make a pass at James Anderson, her coworker.  He was quick to shut her down.  Virginia’s ego deflated slightly.  He had married the town doorknob, yet he wouldn’t come near her?  Maybe she was losing her touch…

Of course, there was always Nevio.  Living across from one another, their affair had been an easy and casual one.  He was older, sure, but Nevio had always had that certain charm a lady couldn’t deny.  He made her feel better.  She still wasn’t looking forward to getting old and wrinkly.

Basil decided that after the loss of Daenarys, he missed having a pet in the house.  He’d always had cats, but maybe a dog would be fun.  He called the local pet shelter and found Roku, a lovable and playful dog in need of a home.  He certainly had fun training him and it took his mind of his illness, which seemed to be getting progressively worse.

Virginia wasn’t nearly as thrilled about the latest addition to the house.  She’d never been much of a pet person and Roku’s incessant need to roll around in the garbage about had her tearing her hair out!  How disgusting and worse, pushing the garbage can over and spilling it everywhere so she had to pick it up.

No one anticipated what happened next… Basil fell to his unexplained illness.  It turned out to be a very aggressive flu strain that developed into pneumonia, which went untreated.  Virginia found Basil crumpled up in the bathroom and called 911 only for it to be too late.  Daisy and Sage came home to mourn their father’s passing, sad that they hadn’t gotten the chance to really see him since they left.

Virginia was left alone in the house with Roku.  She was quite upset about Basil’s passing, she hadn’t anticipated that it would affect her as much as it did.

Even worse, the stress of the incident seemed to have turned her hair prematurely grey all over! She was horrified.  Getting old was one thing, but losing her lovely, red locks?  It was too much.  Now she was an old, widowed woman with a dog and gigantic house.  Who would want to be romanced by such a sad and pitiful thing?

She sighed, fingering her limp hair.  Could things get any worse?

Note from Mao: I really fail at trying to get sims better without the use of soup!  Poor Basil came home from work with a cold.  I had him rest, sleep, and bathe constantly, but nothing worked.  :(   I missed his death because I had the game running in the background on FF while I was checking my email, sigh.  Poor Basil!

Although, the scene I came back to was pretty funny.  Virginia seems to be pretty upset that she didn’t get her kiss before he died, LOL!

  1. LOL! Virginia is upset about that missed last kiss. I think I would be upset as well if hubby died and I couldn’t kiss him.

  2. Uh oh, your sims are just dropping like flies this round. Don’t you hate it when you go AFK or tab out for a few seconds only to come back to a catastrophe? It takes all my will power not to quit without saving. Basil will be missed but I have a hard time feeling badly for Virginia, maybe the Nevio passed on the Anderson curse to her through their affair. Which of the girls is going to be the heir? Sage?

  3. Haha! I don’t think Virginia feels badly for the same reason, though. ;)

  4. I don’t particularly mind anymore when they die. I still get sad when my favorites pass on, but it’s progression and it is one less for me to deal with, LOL! Sometimes I have to resist the urge to vamp them, because there are some I just don’t want to lose. Michael and Sade will be a BIG sadface for me. I have extracted them and may even try to recreate them in TS3.

Sage is the heir due to expressing the most Saunders-like genes.

  5. Uh-oh, realistic sickness gets another one? How shocking too, he’d only just turned elder, right? RIP Basil.

Do you not use the soup as a rule then? Or did you just not have access to it? I wanted to go without using the soup, but then with realistic sickness my illnesses went on for like 4 or 5 days before they’d get better, and BLAH, lol! Who wants to play a sick Sim that long? Without realistic sickness, they get better faster, but there’s no risk.

I’d love to see Michael and Sade in TS3! Would you add them to your Different Views hood?

  6. No one had the ability to cook the soup… :( Poor Basil. I don’t mind playing sick sims, but I can never seem to actually make them better without the aid of the soup!

I’m still sitting on the idea, as there is no decent hair for Michael yet. Sade finally has her bangs back hair, but nothing suits Michael so far. I may still try it. I won’t add them to that hood, though… they’d just be for my own amusement.

  7. Well, to say I wasn’t expecting that would be an understatement. I mean, he just got old! I swear, that realistic sickness mod is killing off Sims left and right. Virginia is pretty funny.

  8. Virginia is hilarious! I know, I felt so bad… but I won’t get rid of realistic sickness. I like that there’s a consequence and I pretty much PANIC anytime someone gets sick.

  9. Does the realistic illness mod make older sims more susceptible to diseases, or is it just harder to maintain high need levels in elders? It’s an interesting hack; I may add it someday.

I’m sure Virginia will find some way to fill her time in her old age, even if it is with Nevio, lol.

    Comment by Shannon — July 19, 2009 @ 5:30 pm

  10. You know, I’m actually not sure. I don’t think so, but I could be wrong. Don’t be afraid of the hack, other people have had no issue getting their sims better… I just seem to fail at it, LOL!

  11. RIP Basil.

  12. I’m glad to see Basil finally started to build a relationship with his daughters, but so sad that it was too late. :( I try not to use the soup to heal sickness, but Xander Gates just got sick and I couldn’t let myself risk losing him, LOL. I’ll bet Virginia is really happy now–Basil gets a dog and then dies, leaving her to care for it! LOL ;)

    Comment by Shana — July 20, 2009 @ 9:31 am

  13. I’m glad you used the soup on Xander! I wouldn’t use it if I was confident I could cure them, but so far I am zero for zero!

    Comment by Mao — July 20, 2009 @ 12:10 pm

  14. :(

  15. …okay, now whenever I see Basil in that hat, I think of only one thing: pimp. xD Real classy.

That’s nice, Virginia. You know, when most people want to feel young, they buy fast cars or go skydiving…you…you hit on everyone you possibly can. Nice.

    D: Basilllll! EVERYONE IS DYING!

    Comment by Elecy — July 21, 2009 @ 2:03 pm

  16. LOL, I love the random hats… they just feel silly on adults, though. Elders, however, have a reason to wear hats! Virginia, also, is a class act. ;)

  17. That’s so funny. She really wanted the final good bye kiss. LOL Man, it seems no matter what I do right now, my sims stay sick. Even after eating the soup. So I’ve been healing them with InSim. We’ll see how this fall and winter season goes.

    Comment by GoldenBuffy — July 21, 2009 @ 3:16 pm

  18. Luckily, the soup works for me… but doing it on my own? Ha! The game laughs in my face. LAUGHS.

    Comment by Mao — July 21, 2009 @ 4:42 pm

  19. Poor Basil and family. Just when he felt the need to get in touch with his girls, he ups and dies.

I do love how mad Virginia is about not getting a kiss.

    Comment by Monique — July 21, 2009 @ 6:58 pm

  20. Quite sad, indeed! :(

    Comment by Mao — July 21, 2009 @ 8:43 pm

  21. Town doorknob, as in “everyone’s had a turn”? I love it!

Poor Basil! Do you use Realistic Sickness? I’ve never had a Sim die of sickness without it so I’m assuming yes. Without that hack, my Sims just used to go about their daily business while sick and got better anyway. Realistic Sickness though…that’s brutal!

    Comment by Carla — August 5, 2009 @ 5:25 pm

  22. Exactly, LOL! Yep, Realistic Sickness is to blame… it takes another victim.
